Employee Spotlight: Getting to Know Tommy Wallis, Sr. Business Development Manager
Great companies are more than salesy pitches and way-to-slick proposals. They’re built by people who genuinely listen, earn trust the hard way, and treat every client relationship like it matters. Because to them? It does.
Tommy Wallis, Sr. Business Development Manager at iSphere, is one of those people.
His background in the education sector rather than traditional sales means he thinks like a social worker and puts people first. As a former superintendent, he knows how to ask the questions that CEOs want answered, cutting through the noise and helping organizations go well beyond simply filling a job description.
In this iSphere Employee Spotlight, Tommy shares how he wins trust with clients, why he sees himself as a partner rather than a salesperson, and what makes his work feel like more than just hitting a quota.
Q: How would you say your approach to your role positively impacts your clients?
Tommy: My approach is rooted in understanding the business problem first, not the job description.
In many cases, clients come in with a very specific idea of what they need. They may ask for a certain title or skill set, but when you take the time to ask thoughtful questions and truly listen, it often becomes clear that the underlying need is something different.
My background in education, particularly as a superintendent, trained me to think at a systems level. I learned how to listen beyond surface-level requests and identify what is actually driving the need. That carries over directly into what I do today.
Because of that, I can help clients refine their thinking early in the process. Instead of simply reacting to a job requisition, I can help shape it. This ensures that what we pursue is aligned with their goals, their environment, and the outcomes they are trying to achieve.
Over time, this approach builds deeper trust. Clients become more transparent, more collaborative, and more open to feedback. At that point, the relationship shifts. You are no longer just a vendor providing candidates, you are a partner helping guide decisions.
That shift is where the real impact happens.
Q: What are some of your strategies and tactics for building trust with your clients?
Tommy: Trust is built through consistency, honesty, and execution, especially when it is not easy.
One example that stands out is when I took over an account in the oil and gas sector. At the time, the relationship was strained, and there was a clear lack of trust. In my first conversation with the client’s CISO, I made a conscious decision to listen first.
He shared several frustrations about what had not been working. Rather than becoming defensive or trying to redirect the conversation, I acknowledged his concerns and took ownership where it was appropriate. That set the tone.
From there, I focused on delivering results. He described a role in detail but never sent over a formal job description. Instead of waiting, I used the information from our conversation, combined with industry knowledge and research, to build a job description myself. I partnered with our recruiting team and quickly presented strong candidates.
When I followed up with him, he told me he had intentionally withheld the job description to see how I would respond. It was a test.
From that point forward, the relationship changed significantly. We grew the account from two consultants to sixteen, and it became a strong, trusted partnership.
That experience reinforced something I believe strongly: trust is not built by saying the right things but by doing the right things consistently over time.
Q: What is your proudest accomplishment so far with iSphere?
Tommy: While there have been a number of successful engagements, the moments that stand out most to me are the ones where you can clearly see the impact on someone’s life.
There was a situation where a client had been trying to fill a help desk role for quite some time. It was not a high-profile position, and it had been opened and closed multiple times without success.
I knew a candidate who did not have the traditional experience on paper but had exceptional ability, work ethic, and potential. I believed strongly that he would succeed if given the opportunity.
I presented him to the client and was very direct. I told them that if they trusted my judgment, this was the right person for the role.
They moved forward, and within three months, they converted him to a full-time employee. Since then, he has been recognized for his performance and has continued to grow within the organization.
That is the kind of outcome that stays with you. It is not just about filling a role—it is about creating an opportunity that changes someone’s trajectory while also delivering value to the client.
Those are the wins that matter most to me.
